Abstract | The purpose of this investigation was to compare the effectiveness of three methods of teaching reading vocabulary to third-grade students. Eighty third-grade students were given Form 1 of the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Tests, Vocabulary Section, Primary C, as a pretest and randomly assigned to three experimental groups and a control group. Forty vocabulary words, the final 40 items on Form 2 of the Gates-MacGinitie, were taught during the five-week period. Eight words were presented to the experimental groups each week, in 15-minute periods three times weekly. The findings indicated that students who were taught using words with definitions and students who were taught using words with definitions and examples of context provided by the students had significantly higher scores than students taught using words in isolation. Students taught using any of the experimental treatments in this study had significantly better reading scores on the posttest than students in the control group who received no instruction. No significant sex differences were noted in the effect of any of the treatment methods. (Author/MKM) |
