AbstractThis paper considers the "why" and "how" of library research as it relates to instruction in a foreign language class. The search for cultural information is viewed as a human and a technical problem. The paper includes steps for guiding student research, discussion of different inquiry contexts, and techniques for literature search. The most important section (VI) is an annotated list of general and cultural reference sources. In effect, this is an intensive examination of reference-room holdings from the point of view of a culturally oriented foreign language teacher or student. Bibliographies, indexes, encyclopedias, handbooks, yearbooks, and directories are studied for their cultural yield. Both historical and anthropological types of cultural information emerge. Most reference sources are accompanied by notes of particular interest to a foreign culture researcher. Key words and cross-reference headings are highlighted. Press and periodical directories, as well as the use of government documents, are vital topics. Appendix A reports an interview with a reference librarian; Appendix B offers pedagogical suggestions for exploiting travel books; Appendix C is a starter list of cultural sources by language area.
