Abstract | A handicapped person's choice of accessible arts activities is very limited. This report focuses on the people and places now developing facility, planning, and program solutions that enable the handicapped to participate in the arts to their fullest potential. The 131 stories about outstanding facilities and programs, current legislation, and technical and design consultants serve as a foundation on which other schools, art institutions, and community centers can build a humane, totally accessible environment for the arts. The appendixes contain resource material including partial lists of nature centers, trails, and fragrance gardens, and of agencies that are interested in removing architectural barriers to the handicapped and that have produced literature on the subject, and a selected bibliography on barrier-free design.
