Abstract	In this essay, the authors explore rhetorical sensitivity and the behaviors that characterize the rhetorically sensitive person as defined by Hart and Burks in a paper entitled "Rhetorical Sensitivity and Social Interaction." Rhetorical sensitivity is viewed as an attitude toward encoding information obtained in social situations. After briefly summarizing the principles of rhetorical sensitivity, the authors detail the means employed to assess the features possessed by rhetorically sensitive individuals, the theoretical worth of the construct, and the directions for future research in the area. Recent research on rhetorical sensitivity is reviewed and some of the data is included in this paper. At the present time, the principles of rhetorical sensitivity are not viewed as behavioral guidelines useful for measuring interpersonal competence. (RB)
