AbstractThis is a preliminary report on a series of small-scale language teaching experiments, aimed primarily at demonstrating that valid research into language teaching methods is possible. Small-scale refers not to the number of subjects involved, but to the scope of the experiment. Instead of looking at a method as a whole (as happens in large-scale global experiments) one limits the area to be investigated, isolating particular variables for study and controlling likely confounding variables. To assess the various methods, two different French grammar topics were presented through the common medium of the language laboratory, at varying levels from first-year university to first-year secondary school in southeast England. Several tapes were made for each topic, all covering the same information, but dealing with it in different ways. The children were divided into groups at random, each child in a particular group using one of the tapes. One group acted as controls. All the subjects were tested on the particular topic before being given the tape, then immediately afterwards, and again ten days later. The results were analyzed statistically, using a computer, to see whether the tapes had had a differential effect on the pupils' achievement and/or attitude scores. (Author)
