Abstract | This guide describes where specific skills are emphasized in the three reading texts (published by Economy, Ginn, and Holt) used in the primary grades in the Stoneham (Massachusetts) Public School System. The four major sections of the book are color-coded and include phonetic and structural analysis, vocabulary development, study skills, and comprehension and thinking skills. Literary plots, settings, and grammar lessons have not been included in this book. The specific skills listed include knowing 21 consonants, 7 consonant combinations, 23 consonant blends, the 5 vowels, vowel homonyms, and acronyms; understanding oral directions and idea illustrating; sequencing events and ideas; problem solving; categorizing; answering questions; understanding the main idea; recognizing imagery and analogies; alphabetizing; interpreting cartoons, maps, charts and graphs; and using the dictionary and thesaurus.
