AbstractThis is a report on the International Schools Association (ISA) workshop which was intended as a high-level conference concerned with new educational thinking in Britain and the U.S., and also as an interdisciplinary experience for participants. The report contains summaries of talks by the principal speakers and a list of the discussion groups. Many of the speakers stressed the need for "humanness" in all educational development and made a plea for community living, respect for others, the sharing of responsibility, and the nobility of work. Others expressed the need for a greater "exactness" in the approach to learning, indicating the importance of interaction, integration, and careful evaluation of progress made. Another speaker emphasized the philosophical nature of the educational process and damanded a transfer of knowledge by students to the outside world so that they might answer their own questions about "relevance" in a practical manner. One speaker showed the importance of a properly organized school situation. Another participant spoke of the organization planning, self-questioning, and honesty required in the teaching of mathematics. Finally, one of the participants demonstrated that "survival techniques" for education in the seventies were already being used in many schools. The report also contains an appendix which includes working and other bibliographies by some of the participants, books and sources for audiovisual methods of teaching, and commercially available curricula from the Learning Research and Development Center at the University of Pittsburgh.
