Abstract | Presenting three position papers, this publication is the first in a series of five volumes on American Indian education. Papers are titled and authored as follows: (1) "Reflections on Contemporary Indian Education" (an introduction to this series, calling for reform via "Indianization" of Indian education) by Vine Deloria, Jr.; (2) "An Historical Overview of Indian Education with Evaluations and Recommendations" (over 100 pages documenting the racial, religious, political, and instructional inequities in the development of American Indian education) by Lehman L. Brightman; and (3) "Eastern American Indian Communities" (a typological study emphasizing the social cohesiveness of eastern Indians despite the traditional lack of Federal and State aid) by Robert K. Thomas. (JC) |
