| Abstract | The purposes of this study were to determine if training in listening would result in the improvement of both reading and listening skills among black students, and if there would be any differences between the results produced by a passive approach to teaching listening, a direct approach to teaching listening, and the offering of no special training whatsoever. Sixty subjects were randomly selected from a population of children attending a school located in the inner-city area of Syracuse, New York. Results of the study, subject to the limitations imposed by data collection and study sample, indicated that training in listening appeared to significantly affect the development of basic listening and reading skills. It also appeared that the direct and passive appraoches were generally equal in producing reading gains. The same was not true in listening--the direct approach to teaching listening produced gains greater than those produced by the passive approach. Implications were reported for classroom implementation and future research possibilities. (Author/RB) |
