Abstract | The report summarizes the nature, scope, and procedures used in the development of a student-oriented instructional program for training police officers in the enforcement of driving-while-intoxicated laws. Instructional materials were prepared and tested in four field trials, revised where necessary, and prepared for mass distribution and program implementation. The course is designed to last 40 hours and covers 16 subjects: orientation, alcohol and highway safety, preparing for alcohol enforcement task, detection of drinking driver (pre-apprehension), detection of drinking driver (apprehension), pre-arrest investigation (field contact), pre-arrest investigation (accidents), handling of the drinking driver suspect, psychophysical testing (classroom), psychophysical testing (laboratory), chemical testing, experience in degenerative effects of alcohol, legal authority in alcohol enforcement, case presentation (testimony), course review, and student and course evaluation. The report includes an outline of the course, and a list of teaching strategies keyed to the outline. An 80-item bibliography and lists of course-related instructional media, transparencies, and evaluation aids conclude the document. (Author/PR) |
