Abstract | In this document the teaching of economics in British schools is investigated by the Royal Economic Society in Collaboration with the Association of University Teachers of Economics and the Economics Association in Great Britain. The following five major questions are considered in this review of the teaching of economics at the university and secondary level: 1) what branches of economics and of associated disciplines should be taught in schools and examined by Examining Boards; 2) what is the desirable division between the economics that should be taught in schools and that taught in universities; 3) what are the desirable forms and tests of qualifications for admission to university courses in economics; 4) in what ways can the teaching of economics in schools be improved; and 5) in what ways can examinations in economics at school level best test the competence of candidates? A general review of economics education and the answers to the five questions are provided in the document. Major goals for teaching British economics and suggested teaching strategies are discussed.
