| Abstract | The first section of this thesis is a review of previous studies and analyses of physician supply. Then, comparing the present physician shortage with the shortage of engineers and scientists during the 1950's, the author examines the present policies of the American Medical Association which, in effect, restrict the entry of physicians into the market. Following a presentation of various factors which tend to influence potential medical school applicants, theoretical structural equations are developed to explain the supply of physicians. Finally, the problem of physician supply in the armed services, and specifically the Navy, is examined in comparison to the above theories. (Author) |
