Abstract | The report on national resources in ophthalmology is the product of a national survey of ophthalmologists between May and December 1968. The survey was conducted by a self-administered questionnaire (a facsimile of which comprises an appendix) that was mailed to the approximately 10,300 ophthalmologists in the United States, of whom over 10,100 responded. The report, supported by 18 detailed tables which cover 28 pages, consists of: (1) a statistical overview of the total national resource in active and inactive ophthalmologists, (2) a statistical evaluation of active ophthalmologists in terms of: their geographical distribution and ratio to the general population; such selected characteristics as their age, sex, specialty board certification, and professional identity (doctor of medicine or of ophthalmology); the scope of their actual and potential activity as indicated by the number of States in which they hold licenses; the vocational context of their professional activity as revealed in their principal form of employment; the volume of their activity as determined from the number of weeks they worked per year and the number of hours they worked per week; finally, the nature of their professional activity as evidenced by the clinical and nonclinical functions in which they engaged.
