Abstract	An exploratory study on unemployment among black teenage females in two urban poverty neighborhoods in New York City (Harlem and Bedford-Stuyvesant) was conducted by the Metropolitan Applied Research Center (MARC) during 1970-71. The unemployment rate among black teenage females (16-19 years) has ranged from 28.4 percent in 1958 to 35.5 percent in 1971. Black teenage females constitute one of the most disadvantaged groups in the urban labor market. The study focused on the supply aspect of the market rather than demand elements, attempting to identify sociopsychological variables which influence the labor market participation of black teenage females. The central finding is that peer group support and reinforcement can be powerful in counteracting some of the negative community/home influences. Some factors identified as affecting employment were: lack of knowledge on how to get a job, lack of child-care facilities, effect of parents' work experience on teenager work attitudes, the need for changing employer hiring policies, and the limitations of surveys/questionnaires for data collection with this population group. Recommendations include: job development and placement, support and guidance for the peer group and family, community participation (school system, day care, manpower agencies), and employer involvement.
