| Abstract | Twelve sections of students and three instructors were used in this study in which inquiry was examined in the context of two teaching methods. The conventional or traditional method used traditional laboratory exercises as the main format. This was considered the control method. An extended laboratory method with the student choosing his problem was the experimental method. All students were treated as a statistical unit and were pre- and posttested with an achievement test developed by the investigator, the Purdue Attitude Test, and the Test On Understanding Science (TOUS). Analysis of covariance was used with the F test applied to test for interaction, and the main effect (method) tested by means of directional planned comparisons using means adjusted by covariance. The F tests were not significant for any of the criterion instruments. The null hypothesis of no interaction could not be rejected for biological achievement, attitude toward biology, and understanding of science. (Author/EB) |
