| Abstract | The Agnate Sentences Test was designed to measure awareness of the relationship between sentences that are similar in semantic content but different in syntactic structure. In this study, developmental differences in the ability to decode written syntax are observed by means of this test which was administered to 63 4th graders, 65 8th graders, and 66 11th graders. Data showing the proportion of subjects in each grade who chose each option of the various items are presented in 25 tables. Comments on the syntax of the sentences and possible interpretations of test results are given in short paragraphs following the tables. It is concluded that although the test results do show something about developmental differences in ability to decode written syntax, exactly what they show about decoding ability and what the implications are for analysis or reading comprehension are questions that require further investigation.
