Abstract | This unit, developed for use with junior high school students, focuses on industry as an integral part of community life. It discusses factors industry should consider before choosing a location; it attempts to demonstrate that industry should not always be regarded negatively in a given community, but rather that it can benefit a community by providing employment opportunities and additional tax revenue. The unit stresses the manufacturing and processing aspects of production and not the distribution and retailing features. It also emphasizes the value of cooperation between industry and local citizens. Two publications necessary to teach the unit are listed along with additional teaching aids in a section for the teacher. The unit includes the behavioral objectives and the expected student criteria for evaluation, pretests and posttests, teacher background information, a suggested instructional sequence, a bibliography of both student and teacher resources, student data sheets and readings.
