| Abstract | A study of 64 Canadian 7-12-year-olds and of adults who might influence their television viewing habits was made to measure the receptivity and acceptability of "Monkey Bars," a children's television program created as an alternative for Saturday morning viewing. A 50-minute composite tape of program segments was shown, after which observation sheets, questionnaires and interviews were used to learn children's character preferences, ability to grasp the educational concepts, attention span and scheduling preferences. Ninety-eight percent of 7-9 year-olds and 84% of 10-12 year-olds said they enjoyed the program and 75% would watch it if offered for home viewing. Adults were evenly divided when asked if they would recommend "Monkey Bars" to children. Two-thirds of the 7-9 year-olds preferred a Saturday morning viewing time, while 10-12 year-olds preferred afternoon. Results showed that younger children overall enjoyed the program, but were not able to grasp all its humor, as older children could.
