AbstractThis practicum reviews the history of community influences on the teaching, research, and service functions of higher education in America. It discusses the role of major social institutions on higher education policy and curriculum in carrying out these three major functions. The study reveals a major shift of influence from church to business, occurring in the late 19th century. It also shows government, labor, alumni, and philanthropic influences on higher education. A study of the influences affecting policy and curriculum at a Florida community college was undertaken. A questionnaire was mailed to the college vocational-technical advisory committee members who are community leaders in various vocational areas. In addition, the top 11 administrators were interviewed to determine the source and extent of other community influences on curriculum and policy. Informal influences were found to be coming from public schools, churches, civic-social clubs, business, and various other groups and individuals. Recommendations to administrators concerning the improvement of relations between the community and college are given in the conclusion. (Author/DB)
