Abstract | This syllabus is designed to help educators present a more realistic global perspective in existing courses by focusing on global problems of poverty and development. The first of three sections, A Development Perspective for Existing Courses, contains nine essays suggesting means for integrating a development perspective into the following courses generally taught at the secondary level: U. S. history and government, sociology and current problems, anthropology and current problems, world history, economics, geography, area studies, home economics, and biology and ecology. Section 2, Background Essays and Teaching Suggestions, contains seven chapters with essays on particular development subjects such as population; development, modernization, and change; and environment and development. Teaching aids include ideas for class discussion, simulations, role-playing situations, and outside activities; cross references to appropriate readings in Section 3; and brief bibliographies and film guides. Section 3 contains reading selections for students--case studies, maps, and charts--as tools to implement the teaching suggestions. An appendix of films and other teaching resources concludes the guide. (JH) |
