Abstract | Project PLAN was chosen as a computer managed individualized instruction program for the St. Louis public schools and is evaluated in this final report. The study was conducted during the 1972-73 school year in both control and PLAN classrooms for grades 1-7. The Metropolitan Achievement Test was used in grades 1-3 and the Iowa Test of Basic Skills was used in grades 4-7. The PLAN classrooms did significantly better in grades 1 and 3 and significantly worse in grades 4 and 6. Grades 4-7 were handicapped by a midyear start up and a contamination of pretest data. Measures of self-esteem and anxiety were also taken and on these three grade levels scored significantly better with PLAN and one significantly worse. Questionnaires of student and teacher opinion were also used, and a cost analysis revealed that the cost of PLAN (10 times greater than the control) could be expected to decrease to normal levels once normal operation begins. On these findings the PLAN program is recommended. Extensive appendixes document the instruments and results of the evaluation. (WH) |
