Abstract	The preservice foreign language teacher training program in the individualization of instruction at Utah State University incorporates several components: (1) systems of accountability and mastery learning, which consist of rigorous systems of quality control; (2) personalized curricula through the expansion of the elective phase of the programs; (3) more individualized courses in areas of specialization as well as in specific teacher education courses, which demonstrate to the prospective teacher the process of individualization; (4) earlier and more extensive experiences in individualization, such as programs in which the students can serve as tutors, as well as those individualized programs in the language department itself. The language department at Utah State has a preservice training system in which many of the foreign language teaching majors and minors receive training in the process of individualized instruction. The students are recruited, trained, supervised, and evaluated as assistants in the teaching of language classes, working predominantly with other students who are experienced senior aides. As assistants, they participate in the actual teaching situation, and thus are individually learning to teach, rather than being told how to teach. (LG)
