| Abstract | The report describes the role and functions of the Great Lakes Region Special Education Instructional Materials Center (SEIMC) from 1966 to 1974 which serves 750,000 handicapped children in Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan. Noted is funding during the first 5 years by the research division of the Bureau of Education for the Handicapped with program emphasis on the development of information systems, instructional resources, delivery systems, and the dissemination of information. A later shift in funding to the education division is reported to have resulted in a shift of emphasis to direct services to handicapped children and their teachers. Discussed are the following project objectives: locating usable child-use and teacher-use materials; developing media and materials information systems; establishing and maintaining instructional development systems, program delivery, and regional SEIMC planning, coordinating, monitoring, and evaluation strategies; collaborating with other SEIMC units, both federal and regional; and developing and delivering regional SEIMC services. Also provided are samples of publications issued to the field, summaries of developed teacher-training kits, and details of workshop strategies and delivery systems. (Author/DB) |
