Abstract | This report, comprising a diagnostic study of a city adult school, was prompted by concern over declining enrollment, which had dropped nearly one-third over a 4-year period. A task force approach was adopted by the graduate students conducting the research, and five areas of study were formulated: administration; community interests; instructional needs; student attitudes; and competition, curriculum and marketing. Each section of the document establishes the problem area, research methods, and findings fo r the issues covered. Recommendations are compiled in a final section, synthesizing the principal recommendations which arise from the five problem areas. The researchers found the underlying problems to be: (1) lack of administrative aggressiveness, (2) the adverse image of educational programs generally in the city, (3) the proligeration of area adult education opportunities. Their 16 recommendations are related to aggressive marketing of the Adult School and to reversing its negative image. Supporting documents, such as correspondence, committee reports, interview forms, a statement of the school philosophy, and biographical information on the researchers, are appended. (AJ) |
