Abstract | This compilation is intended to provide a comprehensive collection of nonprescriptive learning outcome statements for second language instruction. Included are statements of what students can know and can do in the major content areas of second language learning, and in the areas in which second language relates to values education, basic education, and career education. The goals are stated in such a way that they apply to a variety of second languages. Specifically, the goal statements are grouped under the following headings: (1) values and second language, (2) basic education and second language, (3) the function of the language in society, (4) nature of the language, (5) listening, (6) speaking, (7) reading, (8) writing, (9) culture, and (10) careers and second language. It is hoped that school systems will use the collection: (1) to clarify the purposes of education for students, teachers, parents and community; (2) to provide a basis for teaching-learning evaluation and accountability; (3) to aid in the rewriting and development of courses and curricula; and (4) for long-range planning and systematic control of educational development. This book is a critique edition, which is being disseminated to elicit response from the educational community. (PM) |
