| Abstract | Contained in this packet on standardized tests and testing in English is a miscellany of materials written by students, teachers, researchers, test makers, and others about the uses, abuses, and misuses of standardized tests. The materials are not intended to be a definitive study of the standardized test in English but rather to provoke discussion about testing. Among the contents are suggested ways teachers can involve parents, school board members, legislators, the general public, and other teachers in dialogue about standardized testing. The opinions of the several testing authorities and test users included range from limited criticism and calls for cautious interpretation of test results to demands for an end to standardized testing. The uses made of test scores by some school districts and the actions being taken by professional groups to avert misuse of test scores are also reported. A short parody of testing, games for parents to play, and suggested bumper sticker and lapel pin slogans on testing complete the packet's contents. (TO) |
