Abstract | This survey was conducted pursuant to implementation of the New Jersey State Master Plan for Environmental Education. The data obtained provide a base for characterizing the state of the art of environmental education in New Jersey school districts. A previous survey in 1969 identified 185 public school districts which were then involved in either developing or offering programs; in this survey, 242 public school districts of the 402 districts responding reported having environmental education programs. Of particular note is the increased number of monitoring programs focusing on environmental problems of immediate local interest. More than 80% of all responding districts expressed a readiness to test pilot environmental education materials; more than 65% would assist in the establishment of local citizens' committees for environmental education. One hundred forty-nine school districts reported having staff with special training or degrees in environmental education. (Appended are the instrument used in the survey, descriptions (by code) of public and nonpublic school programs by county, a list of counties in New Jersey by region with the number of districts in each county, and a copy of the New Jersey Environmental Education Act.)
