Abstract | The purposes of this volume are to report a survey of current practice in the construction and use of mathematical models for the education sector: to identify the most important technical and substantive problems confronting the model-building effort; and to bridge the gap between the advancing research pursuit of model-building and the lagging practical application of these models applied among the Member countries of the OECD. In 122 cases, detailed interviews, based on a comprehensive questionnaire, obtained information which was then analysed in terms of a classificatory framework. Next, a detailed and substantive description of the different models identified the significant technical and substantive problems encountered in applying the models to education, demonstrating the way in which these problems have been treated. Finally, the study poses the question of whether the models have proved useful in formulating and solving problems of educational policy. The analysis in the report is based on a set of annexes, published separately, consisting of the responses to the questionnaire and other supporting documents. (Author/KSM) |
