AbstractA teacher's resource manual for a three to five week unit in a social studies course, which may also serve as a resource for a biology or an environment course, intends to provide secondary school students with an integrated approach to population growth and the environment in the context of other dimensions of human society, incorporating a "total environmental approach." The objective of the unit is to stimulate informed discussion of the complex problems connected with environment and social change in order that students may come to have sufficient understanding to make their own choices about the future. The resource manual is divided into five sections--each may be studied alone but is better understood as part of the whole. The three middle sections on environment, population and society form the factual backbone of the unity. A conclusion compares predictions and considers alternative strategies for the future. Appendices include a series of discussion questions, a bibliography and a film list. In place of a textbook various readings are reproduced in full in another appendix. (Author/KSM)
