| Abstract | A selection of psychoanalytic literature on childhood traumas is reviewed. Reported are specific observable experiences or circumstances which have been followed by psychopathological development or behavior. Among the experiences and circumstances investigated were: childhood observation of adult intercourse; childhood bodily illness; hospitalization and surgery; congenital deformity; childhood bereavement; and childhood observation of murder. It is hoped that the study of emotional response to easily defined and verified realistic events will emphasize an increasingly rare type of methodology in recent psychoanalytic reporting: observation where hypotheses are in the background rather than the foreground.
