Abstract	The problem of time-shortening the first year of the apprenticeship training program now on-going in the tool, die and precision machining industry is addressed. A research study was carried out comparing apprentices in on-going programs with apprentices in a newly designed programed course of instruction. The results, which are discussed in detail, indicated that: 1) The learning time necessary to acquire and demonstrate competency and capability requirements for selected tasks per machine is shorter than that recommended by present National Tool, Die and Precision Machining Association/Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training (NTDPMA/BAT) standards and, 2) Total machine-time allocations as now specified are not true indicators of learning time. The results show that the assumption that meeting NTDPMA/BAT recommended time-machine standards can be regarded as equivalent to satisfactory completion of first year apprenticeship requirements cannot be substantiated.
