AbstractThree major hypotheses were tested in this study: (1) there will be a greater frequency of forward and backward eye fixation for that linguistically defined area of a selected exprimental sentence which contains the verb, as compared to either the area of the subject or the area of the object of the verb; (2) there will be differences in the average durations of forward and backward eye fixations for the linguistically defined areas of the selected experimental sentences; and (3) there will be no differences between average eye fixation durations which occur in the three position-defined selected experimental sentences. Ten subjects were selected from students and staff at the University of Massachusetts. Twenty active sentences printed in standard elite type were photographed and presented to the subject by means of a rear screen projection technique. The results led to the rejection of hypotheses one and two. Hypothesis three was accepted. Some of the major conclusions were that when using average fixation time as a dependent measure the subjects were visually selective, and that current methodological approaches to the study of this kind of penomena are inadequate.
