| Abstract | A survey of alternative school students was undertaken by the Minneapolis Public Schools in the Spring of 1971 to collect information which would help in the development of programs to meet the needs of these students. A total of 54 students, three-fourths of those attending three alternative schools, completed questionnaires. Compared with their previous (public) schools, alternative schools were viewed by the students as providing: more positive and closer relationships with staff and other students, courses that were more interesting and easier to understand, more student input and freedom, more relevant curriculum, and more opportunities to improve basic skills. Alternative school students appeared to have good self-concepts in general and positive concepts of themselves as learners; however, on items more directly related to school tasks they were not as positive. Implications of the study for the public school system are discussed. (Author/CK) |
