AbstractThe study presented in this paper is devoted to the ideas of self concept and morale for a group of Dakota Indians as compared to non-Indians. The Ideological Survey was used to obtain data for 50 Dakotas in March 1970 through May 1970. The survey norms for the non-Indians were those established by Thorne and Pishkin. Survey items be broken into two divisions: ideas reflecting individualism and capitalism and ideas reflecting collectivism and socialism. The hypothesis that there were no significant differences in attitudes between the 2 groups was supported by information from the questionnaires. Therefore, it was suggested that the Indians' difficulties in adjusting to the overall American culture were caused by the dominant society's bias toward minority groups. The major recommendations was that everyone should try to judge a person by the type of individual he is, rather than by the color of his skin. (KM)
