AbstractThis interim report, commissioned by UNICEF, emphasizes the value of nonformal educational programs to educationally deprived rural children and youth in developing countries. The first set of basic findings and recommendations arising from this extensive international research study is presented. Organized into five chapters, the text includes descriptions of the study and discussion of some fundamental concepts related to nonformal education on which the research analysis and conclusions are based. The primary tasks of nonformal education in rural societies are defined. A broader view of existing patterns in educational programs introduces a sample of selected case studies conducted in four areas of training: agriculture; artisan and craft vocational and pre-vocational preparation; leadership and service; and general and multipurpose education. An appraisal is made of the strengths and weaknesses in these existing programs, and identification is made of major issues confronting nonformal education. These issues focus on two major problems--how to spread educational opportunities to meet minimum essential learning needs of children in rural areas and how to improve the quality and effectiveness of existing and prospective educational activities. Some practical steps that developing countries can take to accelerate progress in the field of nonformal education and some ways in which international agencies might assist are suggested. This report, soon to be published in a slightly revised form, will be entitled "New Paths to Learning". (Author/SHM)
