| Abstract | This book explores the sociological implications of the type of feature films produced in Hollywood. The origins, growth, and economic structure of the film industry are studied with the methodology of social science. The sociological implications of the personal roles projected by film stars and the "world view" implicit in Hollywood motion pictures are delineated. Also examined are the film audience and the sociological influences of films upon audiences. Cinema genres--the western, spy, musical, and gangster films--are explored as embodiments of cultural myth. A discussion and validation of the sociological approach to film criticism and remarks elaborating upon film as a medium for the communication of values conclude the book. (CH) |
