AbstractThis study investigated the impact of English linguistics on elementary school English textbooks published during the decade 1961-1970. The study examined seventeen sixth grade English texts in order to determine trends in the treatment of English grammar. Data were divided to show contrasts between texts published before Roberts' Series (1961-1965), and after Roberts' Series (1966-1970). It was found that in 1961-1965 traditional Latin-based grammar dominated elementary school English textbooks. Grammar was synonymous with usage and emphasis was on "correct" usage. During the second half of the decade structural and transformational-generative grammar concepts were first presented in the Roberts' Series in 1966. Text writers who followed tended to de-emphasize "correct" usage, but 40 percent still included these concepts. It was concluded that while the eclectic grammar presented in most elementary texts between 1966 and 1970 is prescriptive and out-dated, it does break with the past and open the door to newer concepts of language study that affect the elementary school curriculum.
