| Abstract | The purpose of this study was to compare the phonics skills mastered by three groups of fifth and sixth grade students. Sixty fifth and sixth grade students from an open area school were selected as subjects--14 students were reading at third grade instructional level, 15 students at fourth grade instructional level, and 31 students at fifth grade instructional level. In order to compare the groups, three hypotheses were established: there will be differences in the three groups' mastery of the six phonics skills studied; there will be differences in the phonics skills mastered by the fifth grade students reading below grade level and the fifth grade students reading at fifth grade level; and there will be differences in the phonics skills mastered by the sixth grade students reading below fifth grade level and the sixth grade students reading at fifth grade level. Some of the results indicated that phonics skills mastery varies between fifth and sixth grade students who are reading at fifth grade level and those students reading below fifth grade level. Students reading below fifth grade level had mastered consonant sounds, consonant blends, and letter sounds. Students reading at grade level could profit from instruction in blending syllables into words. (WR) |
