Abstract	This survey paper will deal primarily with the following two issues: (1) How to cope with the growth of the metropolitan Lima area, and the current and future stresses on its social and physical environment, and (2) How to develop, if it is possible and desirable to do so, other urban growth poles in the country which will relieve the concentration of population and economic development which is now taking place in Lima. Contents of this paper include: (1) Metropolitan Lima, (2) The Pueblas Jovenes, (3) The Character of Lima, (4) The Structure of Metropolitan Government in Lima, (5) Planning for Metropolitan Lima, (6) Oposecion Entre Lima Metropolitana y El Resto del Pais, (7) The Institutional Inventory--Planning, Research, and Training, (8) The International Roster, (9) Chimbote--A Special Case for International Assistance, and (10) Some Final Observations.
