| Abstract | As the fifteenth of a series of national science policy reviews made in diverse countries, the background and the examiner reports on science policies in Iceland are presented in this book to provide information about the political, economic, and structural aspects of national research and development (R and D) goals. Scientific and technological potential is discussed in connection with the educational system, manpower utilization, and funding of R and D expenditures. R and D performance is analyzed in terms of the scope of basic and applied research, organizations involved, and environments necessary for science to develop. Examiner's reports are concerned with the evaluation of prevailing research activities and the designing of future science policies and research organizations. Discussion records of the Confrontation Meeting held in September, 1971, are incorporated to express relationships of science policy to education and economy and the place of science and technology in governmental institutions. Overall conception of research policy is described as the role of the National Research Council. Besides illustrations for explanation purposes, 16 appendices relating to school enrollment, government expenditure on education and R and D, and breakdown of highly qualified and educated people are included.
