| Abstract | The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate a curriculum using Scandura's algorithmic approach to characterize the knowledge inherent in a text. Two one-semester curricula were compared: a discrete characterization (D) in which each class of behaviors was accounted for separately, one rule for each behavior; and a higher order characterization (H), which included five rules which took account of interrelationships among the discrete rules. The two treatments were each reproduced in the form of a workbook and subjects worked individually with assistance provided as needed. The results confirmed the original hypotheses: there was no significant difference between groups D and H on tasks found only in treatment D, but group H performed significantly higher than group D on tasks found only in group H. Theoretical predictions of performance of individuals based on the rules they learned were most often correct (from 68 percent to 93 percent). It is argued that a curriculum based on the higher-order formulation could provide for creative transfer of learning while retaining the advantages of specific behavioral objectives. (MM) |
