Abstract | This report contains the formal documents leading to the inclusion on the provisional agenda of UNESCO's 1972 General Conference of a discussion considering the desirability of adopting an instrument for the protection of translators. Included in the document is the "Preliminary Study of the Technical and Legal Aspects of Copyright Protection for Translators." This report raises such issues as the quantitative importance of translation, the importance of the role of translation, and the need for high standards. It also considers the legal status of translators, reviewing present national and international agreements and certain special problem areas which are left unresolved such as renumeration, evaluation procedures, several translations of the same work, and retranslation. Also included are the recommendations of the Committee of Experts on Translators' Rights which worked for UNESCO in 1968. (VM) |
