| Abstract | Research conducted by the British Broadcasting Company on the incidence of violence on television and its impact upon society revealed that an objective analysis of program content by trained observers showed a considerable measure of violence, amounting to an average of a violent sequence every half hour. It also showed, however, that most viewers did not regard the average program as violent because the aggressive behaviors which they contained were seen as unrealistic or unfamiliar. Results of studies of the functions served for viewers by programs with violent sequences supported the following hypotheses: 1) that most violence has little significance; 2) that those for whom violence is significant are the fearful, the anxious, and the older viewers; 3) that realism is a major element in making violent episodes significant; and 4) that when violence is a salient feature it does have recognizable functions for viewers.
