Abstract | Four points are made and discussed concerning the correction for guessing on tests: (1) the correction could more properly be called a penalty for answering wrong; (2) the basic assumption underlying the correction is the concept of the "chance score"--one expects a proportion of the number of items to be answered correctly on the basis of chance; (3) the correction makes a difference in the relative positions of individuals in a group if there is considerable variation in the number of omitted items; and (4) when a comparison of the corrected and uncorrected scores on a power test shows considerable discrepancies in relative standing of the examinees, the question is not which type of score should be used; the question is whether or not the test is really a power test and whether it is appropriate for use with the group.
