| Abstract | This book describes methods by which a teacher may introduce children to the appreciation and creation of poetry. The writer is a children's poet, an elementary school teacher, and an anthologist. The book begins with a chapter discussing what poetry is and what kinds of poetry appeal to children. Subsequent chapters discuss (1) poets likely to appeal to primary and middle grade students (2) ways to stimulate children to write poetry, (3) themes for poetry programs, (4) poetry reflecting contemporary trends, and (5) poetry in media. There are three appendixes: (1) a selective list of poems available in paperback books, (2) a selected list of outstanding volumes of poetry written by children for children, and (3) a list of sources of educational materials.
