| Abstract | This exploratory study compared alternate theories made during inquiry lessons by students in the classroom and those held by student teachers. The rationale of the study is based on the author's belief that student teachers present data in such a manner that students are caused to form alternate theories. Such alternate theories are mostly unacceptable by student teachers and they find themselves uneasy in such situations. This results in a change in their teaching styles from inquiry-oriented teaching to other procedures. Video and audio recordings were prepared of actual microteaching sessions involving student teachers and high school students. The analysis of episodes revealed that student teachers could not handle alternate ideas or theories proposed by students. In such situations, student teachers were forced to deal with the theories in a manner which made the process of inquiry appear dogmatic to the student. (Author/PS) |
