Abstract	This analytical survey of research on early school leaving was done under the auspices of the Center for Studies in Education and Development at the Graduate School of Education of Harvard University. The purpose of the study is to offer an introduction to research on the antecedents and consequences of early school leaving for planners, practitioners, and researchers who are concerned with education. "Antecedents" of early leaving comprise those factors outside as well as inside the school that seem to be related to departure from school; "consequences" of early leaving deal with the extent to which post-school characteristics of individuals differ according to their level of schooling. The major point of reference in the survey is the Third World; relevant materials from developed countries such as the United States are included primarily to broaden the horizon of possible research designs, methods, and hypotheses that might be considered in formulating new studies in the Third World. The authors carefully note that the concept of early school leaving will vary by system and setting; therefore, what constitutes "early" leaving will have to be viewed in reference to the particular country where the study is conducted. A major portion of this bulletin is devoted to the research abstracts which detail time and location of the study, objectives, methods employed, and the findings. (Author/SES)
