| Abstract | The primary purpose of this study was to analyze one inquiry technique in the teaching of biology, the use of "Invitations to Enquiry," and to assess its effect on critical thinking, knowledge of the processes of science, and attitude toward biology of ninth grade BSCS biology students. A second purpose of this study was the effect of the utilization. The sample was composed of 132 ninth grade students (22 in each of six classes) taught by three teachers in three Missouri junior high schools. Each teacher taught both a control and an experimental group. Analysis indicated use of the "Invitations to Enquiry" improved the critical thinking ability of the students and did not hinder or improve the attitudes of the students toward biology. All of the hypotheses were examined at the .05 level of confidence. (Author/RH) |
