AbstractThis longitudinal study examines and compares characteristics of students from 2- and 4-year colleges. The study selected 23 2- and 4-year colleges from five states; the subjects consisted of the entire entering classes at the 2-year colleges and a sample of 100 entering full-time students at each of the 4-year schools. The instruments were administered four times during the students' academic careers: (1) at the time of entrance; (2) at the end of the second year; (3) at the beginning of the third year including those junior college students transferring to 4-year institutions; and (4) at the end of the 4-year college experience. Some of the conclusions include: (1) personality characteristics, defined by the Edwards Personal Preference Schedule (EPPS), is a major dimension that differentiated between junior and senior college students at the time of college entrance; (2) significant differences were found in EPPS mean performances between junior and senior college men, and also between junior and senior college women; (3) comparing performances of both junior and senior college men, EPPS showed personality changes occurring in the students with the passage of time in college. A more descriptive analysis of the student population, along with statistical tables in comparing EPPS scores of both groups, is included.
