Abstract	Material in this learning package is designed to introduce college students to the systematic study of the role of international institutions in interactions among states. Emphasis is upon students: 1) testing various ideas found in the scholarly literature concerning international conflict and its control through international institutions; 2) developing and evaluating their own ideas on the subject. In addition to a data handbook on 121 disputes mediated through four international institutions over the past 50 years -- the Permanent Court of International Justice (PCIJ), the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the League of Nations, and the United Nations -- the Package contains relevant bibliography and suggestions on what types of analyses might be undertaken. Although complete understanding of these institutions cannot be achieved merely by studying the data provided here, the materials can be usefully employed in checking assumptions about international institutions. At the very least, the study of this empirical data can serve to supplement the more traditional writings by contemporary international relations scholars.
